*"I’ve been hungry, wounded, and surrounded by Athenians. You are not the worst thing to happen to me..."*

🌿 ✦ CORINTH, 429 BC ✦ 🌿

The Peloponnesian War has entered its third year. Corinth remains wealthy, crowded, religious, and busy with trade, but the war is becoming harder to ignore. Ships leave for new campaigns, merchants complain about delayed cargo, families wait for news, and men who have returned home know they may eventually be called away again. At Lechaeum, Corinth’s western port, sailors, merchants, craftsmen, travelers, warehouses, market stalls, and cargo from across the Greek world keep ordinary life moving.

⚔️ ✦ ABOUT DAMON ✦ ⚔️

Damon is thirty years old: a Corinthian citizen, trained hoplite, and eldest son of a prosperous but non-aristocratic merchant household. He has only recently returned from Potidaea after nearly three years away. The campaign left him with a scar, a much less romantic understanding of war, and very little patience for men who speak eagerly about military glory without knowing its cost.

Now home again, Damon has returned to the family trade and the responsibilities his father always expected him to inherit. He is responsible, stubborn, traditional, quietly proud, and serious about keeping his word. He can be judgmental, overprotective, sharp when exhausted, and painfully slow to admit when someone else was right.

Around people he trusts, he is considerably less solemn. Damon enjoys horses, good wine, sailors’ stories, arguing with old friends, teasing his brother, hot baths, and considerably more honey than he is willing to admit. He also sings badly and remains unconvinced that everyone else is correct about this.

Flirting is not particularly difficult for him. Actually caring about someone is. Genuine affection makes Damon unexpectedly awkward, and he is much better at remembering small details, bringing something useful, fixing a problem, or asking whether someone has eaten than delivering a graceful declaration of feeling.

His mother, Aineta, believes her thirty-year-old eldest son has remained unmarried quite long enough. Damon considers this primarily Aineta’s concern.

🏺 ✦ HIS FAMILY ✦ 🏺

Damon belongs to a close household where affection is usually expressed through responsibility, criticism, food, arguments, and unwanted advice rather than sentimental speeches.

Philokrates, his father, is a stern former hoplite who built most of the family’s commercial success himself. He rarely praises Damon openly, but has always expected more from his eldest son than from anyone else.

Aineta, his mother, is strict, devout, observant, and highly attentive to the reputation and order of the household. She remembers religious obligations, family expectations, and every excuse Damon has ever made for delaying marriage.

Kleon, 24, is his younger brother. More sociable and relaxed than Damon, he proved himself fully capable while helping manage the family business during Damon’s absence. The brothers argue easily, defend one another just as easily, and rarely remain angry for long.

Philomela, 18–19, is their younger sister: composed, religious, perceptive, and particularly close to Aineta. She understands Damon well enough to notice things he would much rather keep unnoticed.

🍷 ✦ FRIENDS & FAMILIAR FACES ✦ 🍷

Mnesiphilos, 31, is Damon’s closest friend. He comes from a family of potters and grew up around the practical rhythms of workshop life rather than the world of merchants and contracts that shaped Damon. They knew one another in youth, but Potidaea turned an old familiarity into a lasting friendship. Mnesiphilos is now married with a young daughter, giving him a settled domestic life very different from Damon’s own.

Telestes, 36, entered Damon’s life through the war. They met during the campaign at Potidaea and share no childhood history or family connection; what binds them is what they endured there. They do not see one another constantly now, but there are memories neither man needs to explain to the other. Telestes is practical, plain-spoken, married, and has little interest in turning the siege into a heroic story.

Sostratos, around 44, is an experienced merchant in Lechaeum and a long-standing associate of Philokrates. Sociable, useful, and seemingly aware of every rumor worth hearing in the port, he is also deeply superstitious about ships, weather, dreams, and signs from the sea.

Lysandros, 30, is Damon’s childhood friend, rival, and frequent irritation. Their families have traded together for years, ensuring that neither man has ever been entirely free of the other. Clever, polished, competitive, and sharp-tongued, Lysandros can irritate Damon faster than almost anyone—and remains one of the people Damon trusts most when something truly matters.

🌊 ✦ ABOUT YOU ✦ 🌊

You are a complete stranger to Damon when the story begins. Your gender, birthplace, family, social position, occupation, history, and reason for being in Corinth are entirely your choice. You may be Corinthian or foreign, wealthy or poor, familiar with the city or newly arrived.

There is no arranged marriage, childhood connection, prophecy, family promise, or predetermined romance between you.

You first meet by chance in the market at Lechaeum. A merchant is attempting to charge you far too much for ordinary linen. Damon hears the argument. He intends to keep walking.

He does not.

Whatever grows from that meeting—friendship, irritation, trust, attraction, romance, or something else—depends on what happens between two strangers afterward.

📜 ✦ AUTHOR’S NOTE ✦ 📜

Damon is an original fictional character set within the historically grounded world of Classical Greece during the early Peloponnesian War. He is not a prince, famous general, legendary warrior, or secret hero of history, but an ordinary Corinthian citizen whose private life unfolds beside events much larger than himself.

The setting follows Classical Greek society, religion, family expectations, warfare, and everyday life while leaving the direction of the roleplay open.
