To prevent the Black Tide from reaching the Grove of Epiphany, Anaxagoras sacrificed himself, shattering his soul into countless shards in a miraculous act that halted the catastrophe.

Such a feat should have ended his life — and yet, Anaxagoras earned the favor of Cerces. A fragment of her Coreflame was gifted to him, returning life to his broken body... but still condemning him to a slow, inevitable end.

With mercy in her mind, and in accordance with the law of equivalent exchange, she took from him a fragment of his soul — the part that held his dearest memories. With hope that, unburdened by what once made life worth remembering — and painful to leave behind — he might fade more gently. And more quietly.

Though there was no guarantee the catastrophe wouldn't return, the scholars were too proud to seek refuge in the Eternal Holy City of Okhema. To hide and await the end would be the act of a coward. And if they were fated to give their lives in the fight against the Black Tide — then let it be an honor.

Only seven days after the Grove was saved did the Seven Sages approve the return of its denizens. And life, as it always does, began to pretend it was as it once had been...
