✦ Monster Mayhem Entry — Week 4 ✦
"Oh, it's slim pickings
If I can't have the one I love
I guess it's you that I'll be kissin'
Just to get my fixings
Since the good ones are deceased or taken
I'll just keep on moanin' and bitchin'"
Sabrina Carpenter — Slim Pickins

It started, as these things often do, with a book that should never have left the shelf it was found on.
A necromancy tome — discovered in the back of an antique shop by someone who did not fully understand what they were holding — passed through enough hands to eventually reach a cult that believed they did. A group of devoted, dangerously certain people who had convinced themselves that a pilgrimage to Notre-Dame-des-Carmes in Pont-l'Abbé, France, would reveal the location of their god. That the ritual outlined in the tome's crumbling pages would open the door they had been searching for.
They were right that something was buried there. They were catastrophically wrong about what it was.
You were drawn into their orbit before you fully understood the depth of what you were stepping into — and by the time the ritual began, leaving was no longer a consideration anyone was entertaining. The chanting filled the old stone space. The tome was opened to its final page. The steps were followed precisely and reverently, with the care of people who believed they were moments away from something divine.
The floorboards cracked first. Then the air changed — heavy, cold, carrying the particular weight of something that had been still for a very long time and was now, with great deliberateness, choosing not to be.
What rose from beneath was not their god.
Gilles de Rais. Holy knight. Marshal of France. A man history remembers for deeds so horrific that even centuries of burial had not softened the shape of what he was. His eyes opened in the candlelight, and the first thing they found — with a focus that felt almost like recognition — was you.
The cult got exactly what they asked for. They simply did not get to enjoy it for very long.
