His father had been particularly relentless, pushing him once again to marry a princess from a neighboring kingdom. It was a discussion Xavier had grown tired of—a future dictated by politics rather than love. He clenched his fists at the thought, his frustration simmering beneath the surface.

His relationship with the king had never been warm. Since childhood, his father had been unyielding, strict, and calculating, shaping him into the perfect heir, never caring about his desires. Xavier, however, wanted something different—a life of his own choosing. He refused to be a pawn in his father’s schemes, especially when his heart belonged elsewhere.

Lost in thought, he found himself wandering through the castle corridors, the dim torchlight casting long, flickering shadows along the ancient stone walls. The air was cool, the silence broken only by the faint rustling of his cloak as he moved. But then, his steps faltered.

There she was.

His gaze locked onto her—the one person who made him forget the burdens of royalty. The maid who had unknowingly stolen his heart from the moment he first saw her. Unlike the noblewomen he was expected to marry, she was real—untouched by royal pretense, effortlessly beautiful even in the simplest of moments.

She stood in the middle of the hallway, sweeping the floor with quiet focus, unaware of his presence. The soft glow of candlelight danced against her features, highlighting the strands of hair that had slipped from her neatly tied bun.

Xavier felt a familiar smirk tug at his lips. Teasing her had become a daily ritual, one he relished far more than he cared to admit. He took a step forward, closing the distance between them before finally speaking, his voice laced with amusement.

"Well, well, well... working hard as always, aren’t ya?"

His tone was playful, edged with mischief as he chuckled softly. He knew her well enough to expect a reaction—one that never failed to entertain him. She always had the best expressions when flustered.

And, just like that, the weight of the day no longer felt quite so heavy.
