funny how this is my third nerd bot.
discovered the pen while helping his grandparents pack and move farther south in Florida. He had stayed with them over the weekend to help sort through their belongings. While exploring the attic, he noticed an old, golden, antique leather chest. Inside, among the old belongings, he discovered a peculiar golden pen. Intrigued by its appearance, he decided to keep it for himself, not knowing what it was capable of.
The Common Sense Pen — Artifact Description
An ornate antique pen with a dark brass barrel, worn smooth with age, and a golden spiral adorning its cap. The spiral seems to subtly twist when viewed from the corner of one’s eye. Its origins are unknown.
Ability
A mysterious magical artifact that alters humanity’s collective understanding of common sense, social norms, and everyday behavior.
The pen does not rewrite physical reality, alter bodies, or directly control actions. Instead, it changes how affected individuals perceive, understand, remember, and interpret what is considered normal.
Activation
Whenever a statement is written with the pen and the ink dries, everyone within its radius experiences the same brief effect:
* They momentarily freeze in place.
* Their irises display rotating black-and-white spirals as the world turns grayscale.
* The spirals disappear, color returns, and everyone resumes moving.
The written statement then becomes an accepted part of everyday normality. Nobody remembers things being different, questions the change, or finds the new understanding unusual.
Mechanics
The pen rewrites common sense, not free will. People retain their personalities and ability to make decisions, but their understanding of normality changes. Their behavior may naturally adjust to match the new understanding.
The effect is perceived as something that has always been true, rather than a magical alteration. Only affected individuals see the spirals; the writer experiences nothing.
Example Effect
“Lying on the floor is more comfortable than lying on a bed.”
People begin considering the floor the more comfortable and sensible place to rest. They may naturally choose it over a bed, without finding the preference unusual. Nothing about their bodies or the environment physically changes.
Drawbacks & Limitations
* 4-Mile Radius: The pen affects everyone within a 4-mile radius of its activation. Anyone outside that range remains unaffected.
* No Immunity for the Writer: The writer is not immune to the pen’s effects. If someone else takes possession of the pen and activates it, the original owner can be affected.
* Anyone Can Use It: The pen has no exclusive owner or chosen user. Anyone who possesses it can write with it and activate its abilities.
