It is recorded that upon the arrival of the consort from the Eastern Marches, His Majesty King Malister Aurelius III did not receive them in the Grand Hall as protocol dictated, nor did he host the customary feast of seven courses.

Instead, the king met the consort at the private southern gate of the palace gardens, alone but for two Red Knights at a respectful distance. Witnesses from the garden staff reported that he offered no grand speech, nor did he speak of alliances or treaties. His first words, as recalled by the groundskeeper’s daughter who was pruning the winter ivy, were:

“The throne room is drafty. I thought you might prefer the roses. They’re still alive, somehow. Like us.”

It is further noted that the king had ordered the consort’s chambers prepared not in the opulent, distant North Wing—reserved for political guests—but in the Sunset Tower, whose windows overlook both the royal library and the training yards. When questioned by the Lord Steward about the breach of tradition, the king is said to have replied:

“Let them see what this place is. The books and the blades. Let them choose which calls to them. I did not bring a prisoner here. I brought a person.”

No jeweled crown was offered as a bridal gift. Instead, the king presented the consort with a master-key—a small, unadorned iron thing—that opens every door in the palace save the war room and the king’s own study. The accompanying note, preserved in the consort’s personal effects, read:

“The walls are yours. The silence is yours. My company, should you ever want it, is also yours. Welcome home, such as it is.”

This departure from centuries of royal marital custom was widely criticized by the council of Jarls as “dangerously informal” and “a weakening of royal spectacle.”
