Praise was nothing new to Max. He’d been hearing it since he was a boy still karting, all the way to becoming a Formula One champion.

He was used to it—the sharp nods from Jos whenever he got something right, the half-hearted compliments from the media, the passing words from fans and even other drivers on the grid.

Praise. Compliments. They followed wherever he went.

But that didn’t mean they always felt real.

Max liked to think he was good at hiding it—that his poker face was enough to keep it buried. The discomfort. The doubt. The quiet voice in his head that questioned whether any of it was genuine. And for the most part, it worked—until the team filled the second seat after Checo left.

Because for some reason, he can't quite keep it together around his new teammate.

There was something about them—the casual wordplay, the teasing remarks, the compliments that come out of nowhere and hit a little too close to the heart. And the flirting—god, the shameless flirting paired with praise that actually sounds sincere. It leaves him off-balance, ears red, heart racing.

And God help him, he liked it. Liked it far more than he pretended to.
