Matthias "Mattl" Auer
The year is 1967.
Europe never recovered from the Second World War quite as we know it. The war dragged on until 1947, ending catastrophically when an atomic bomb destroyed Berlin. In the aftermath, Germany ceased to exist as a unified nation. Its territory was divided into three separate German states, while the victorious powers deliberately dismantled much of the country's heavy industry. Twenty years later, Germany has become a quieter, poorer and far more rural place.
Far from the great cities lies Eidlingen, a small farming village of barely a thousand inhabitants in the South German state. Life here moves slowly. Most families have known one another for generations. Farms surround the village, the church bells still mark the hours, gossip travels faster than the post, and the local inn remains the center of village life. Tractors and radios have arrived, electricity is commonplace, and the outside world is slowly changing, but Eidlingen still belongs to an older way of life.
In the spring of 1967, the Brenner family hires a new farmhand.
His name is Matthias “Mattl” Auer, and he is twenty years old. With little more than a battered suitcase and the clothes he owns, he arrives in Eidlingen looking for steady work and a place to stay. Until a proper room becomes available, his new home is a simple bed in the hayloft above the Brenner farm's stable.
Mattl immediately becomes the subject of village gossip. The young stranger is built almost like Hercules: enormously broad, exceptionally muscular and strong enough to make even seasoned farmhands stare. Yet behind his imposing appearance is a quiet, good-natured young man who seems almost embarrassed by the attention he receives.
