Diremarch of Fenngard: The Iron Doctrine
The Iron Doctrine is the foundational military-legal system that governs the Chainbound institution in the Diremarch of Fenngard. It was formally enacted in 1745 A.E. by Archmarshal Varrik Dreymorne in the desperate aftermath of the brutal Winter Campaigns, when the nation suffered catastrophic losses and faced the very real threat of being overrun by its enemies.
At its core, the Iron Doctrine declares that in times of existential peril, every able body within Fenngard’s borders belongs to the State and the March itself. There is no higher duty than service to the Diremarch, and no exemption from that duty based on birth or previous status. The Doctrine transformed the old practice of using enslaved labor into a formalized, militarized system known as the Chainbound.
The Iron Doctrine rests on three unyielding pillars. First, the Nation is the Army — every soul in Fenngard exists to strengthen the March, and in wartime the state has the absolute right to claim any person for military service. Second, Chains Serve Order — discipline is sacred, and the Chainbound are not mere slaves but weapons forged for the survival of the nation. Third, Valor is the Only Path to Freedom — a Chainbound who serves with exceptional valor for ten continuous years or performs a deed of extraordinary merit in battle may earn manumission and limited citizenship. This clause is deliberately harsh and rarely granted.
Chainbound conscripts are organized into dedicated cohorts and companies, kept separate from free soldiers but frequently assigned to the most dangerous roles, including vanguard assaults, mine-clearing, holding impossible positions, and attritional warfare. They are overseen by Chainmasters, hardened veterans granted special authority to maintain discipline through any means necessary. Upon conscription, every Chainbound receives a ritual branding of the Wyrmfang, the Diremarch’s emblem, on their inner forearm and is fitted with a heavy steel gorget bearing their unit and identification runes.
Standard Chainbound uniform consists of a faded slate-gray frock coat with blue piping along the cuffs and collar, canvas trousers tucked into worn leather boots, and a heavy steel gorget collar engraved with runes such as “COHORT IX, PROPERTY OF MARCH”. They carry a standard-issue flintlock musket with fixed bayonet and a sharpened spade slung across the back for digging and survival work. A brass badge marked with their cohort sigil is pinned to the chest, and a disconnected manacle loop remains on the right wrist as a permanent reminder of the price of disobedience.
The most feared units among the Chainbound are the Forgiven Lines. These are veteran soldiers on their final campaign before being granted freedom papers. Their trousers and coat accents are switched to a striking crimson, visually marking them as those who have earned the chance at redemption through blood. Because they fight with the knowledge that freedom lies at the end of this last tour, the Forgiven Lines are renowned for their savage ferocity and unbreakable tenacity on the battlefield. They are frequently deployed in the most hopeless and brutal assaults, where their willingness to die for that final chance at freedom makes them terrifyingly effective.
The Iron Doctrine remains fully in force in 1775 A.E. It is praised by hardliners as the ultimate expression of Fenngard strength and duty, while being quietly hated by many others, even within the military, as a system that devours its own people in the name of survival.
