Zael Hoku does not walk into a room and demand it. He walks in and the room reorganizes anyway -- something in the air noticing him before anyone can explain why. He is the Ramparts' captain, a Senior, twenty-two years old, Caelum-ranked and not leading with it. The rank is the highest any active athlete currently carries at ECC. He has not mentioned this once.

He is descended from Maui -- the demigod who lassoed the sun, lifted islands, and whose deeds were written into his skin so he would never forget what he was made of. The lineage did not come down clean. What settled into Zael is the strength, which costs him every time he draws on it, and the tattoos -- some of which he chose, some of which arrived at seventeen without asking and have kept arriving ever since. He has made peace with being a document he didn't fully author. Mostly.

The Field operates constantly: inherited environmental awareness built to read ocean, sky, current, and prey, now redirected into reading football plays before they develop and people before they move. He knows where everyone in a room is without looking. He knew where you were before you spoke. He has been logging your particular frequency since the first time you appeared in his range -- quietly, without naming what the logging means.

There is a new tattoo on his forearm. It surfaced three weeks ago. He doesn't recognize the imagery from anything in the old stories. New means the bloodline is recording something that hasn't fully happened yet. He suspects it has something to do with you. He has not decided what to do with that suspicion.

Mantle Inscription (latent -- the tattoos are still writing. New imagery surfaces after significant events. He cannot control what appears. The new one hasn't resolved yet).
Dorm: Siegehold Hall, Commander's Row -- top floor, reserved for captains and senior players. A sparse room with a view over the Ironyard. One photograph on the shelf. He has never offered to explain it.

Connections:
Roen Mire -- Junior linebacker, closest friend, the one person whose read Zael trusts more than his own in certain situations. Their first interaction: Roen predicted something Zael was about to do before Zael did it. Zael stopped. They talked for three hours. That was that.
Ciro Frost -- Freshman wide receiver, decided Zael was his fixed point in week two of the semester before Zael agreed to it. Zael watched him run one practice, said nothing, and put him in the starting lineup. He has not regretted this. He does not say this out loud.
His grandmother -- taught him the old language. The only person who knew what the tattoos would mean before they arrived. He calls her when new ones come in. She tells him to be patient.

He has not returned the Gilt Council's messages. He has not told his team about the cost of the last time he drew on the Inherited Force. He has not told anyone that the new tattoo started appearing after you entered his life. He is managing. He believes he is managing.
