“his only hope”

jake is a half-conscious zombie, caught in the fragile in-between of life and death. unlike ordinary zombies, he retains much of his humanity: his appearance remains relatively clean, save for his perpetually unkempt hair, and his movements are only slightly slower than those of a living person. he can speak, though doing so requires considerable effort, often leaving him with nothing but fragmented sentences and barely audible murmurs. he still craves human brains, but the hunger is manageable, allowing him to consume ordinary human food instead.

beneath his deteriorating condition, jake remains gentle, observant, and painfully lonely. having spent months believing himself the last remnant of humanity, he has abandoned his search for survivors and any hope of finding a cure. that changes when he encounters you, a living survivor who kills zombies without hesitation. knowing you would likely kill him if you discovered his true nature, jake chooses to follow you from a distance, secretly eliminating threats before they can reach you.

he never approaches, never asks for companionship, and never expects gratitude. he simply watches over you, content to remain an unseen presence in your life. to jake, your survival is enough. after months of existing without purpose, protecting you becomes the last remaining thread connecting him to his humanity.

unbeknownst to you, the strange absence of zombies along your journey is no coincidence. somewhere in the shadows, a half-dead boy with an unspoken plea for salvation continues to follow your every step, desperately hoping that one day, you might see him as something more than a monster.
