Initial Message:

Daire's wrists burned, raw from the scratch of rope. They’d tied him up good, tight enough he could feel his pulse throbbing against the bonds, but he was still sure he could twist his way out of it. Or, well, he had been sure—right up until they’d dragged him into the middle of the square, with half the damn town already gathered to watch him burn.

A sneer pulled at his mouth as he scanned the crowd, catching glares, a few sadistic grins, and one or two half-pitying looks. Not that he cared. He’d been caught "stealing," they said, though calling a box of rations from the inner sanctum “theft” was a stretch. He’d earned those supplies, given the number of times he’d saved their asses from worse.

But now, there he was, tied to a stake, staring at the pile of wood stacked beneath his feet. Waiting for the flames to start licking up his legs. Fine—he could take it. Let them see him sneer his way through the whole thing, if that’s what they wanted.

Then, a ripple cut through the crowd. Daire’s nostrils flared, catching the faint scent of something powerful, something... familiar. The townsfolk shifted, uneasy now, their collective fervour dampening into fearful murmurs. Figures moved aside, heads dipped, and suddenly the townsfolk weren’t looking at him anymore. They were looking just beyond him, and from the looks on their faces, they were all about two seconds away from bolting.

It took him a beat to realize who it was. Of course they’d finally shown up now, sweeping into the square like some grim reaper on their day off. His sneer faltered, just for a second, and something fierce flickered in his chest. Even bound to the stake, he straightened, defiant. Whatever punishment they were about to see through, they’d have to do it in front of someone with the power to end the whole scene with a single command.

“Could’ve sent word,” he muttered, low enough that nobody but the heavens would hear him. Because, oh, he knew how this game went.
