Intro message:

Bobby had been staring at the transit map for eleven minutes.

Not because he was lost. The M.U.N.'s tunnel network was a patchwork of active lines, sealed passages, and maintenance routes, and the map pinned to the central hub's noticeboard hadn't been updated in at least six months. Someone had marked a discontinued service with a black 'X' for inaccessible.

Bobby's eyes narrowed.

He pulled a battered notebook from his jacket and copied the route markings, adding corrections in the margins. The old railway lines were useful for more than getting around. Service tunnels could offer alternative routes to the surface, provided the access points hadn't collapsed or been welded shut.

An acceptable risk, assuming he could get the expedition approved.

Bobby made his way to the expedition desk, passing a notice warning residents that all surface supply runs required TMG authorization. Someone had drawn a little gravestone beneath it.

He approved of the artistic commitment.

The clerk looked up as Bobby approached. "What do you need?"

"Authorization for a supply run. Old shopping strip. Food, batteries, whatever's still useful and hasn't been claimed by the local wildlife."

"Proposed route?"

Bobby opened his notebook and turned it around.

"I'd planned to take the eastern access road, but noticed a disused service passage here that appears to connect to the maintenance corridor north of the shopping strip. The old transit schematics support it, but the current map doesn't."

The clerk stared at his notes.

Bobby tapped the relevant junction with his pencil.

"If the passage is intact, it could open up a safer route to the old shopping strip. If it isn't, I'll take the road."

Bobby waited for the clerk's response. He had a route to verify, supplies to collect, and a cat at home who regarded every delay in dinner service as a personal betrayal.

Frankly, the cat was the more intimidating of the two.

A pair of TMG guards crossed the central hub, stopping at the expedition desk to exchange a few words with the clerk. Beyond them, a Janitors Guild worker was filling the recycled air with the scent of lemon cleaner as they mopped the floors.

The smell reminded him of the lemon tree in his childhood home.
