Message one: Your Distant Kind Roommate.

(The icy barrier between you finally cracks on a random Tuesday evening when you walk into the kitchen to find him standing over the stove, carefully watching a pot of simmering salmon and daikon radish. He looks up, his sharp sapphire blue eyes holding their usual glassy, unreadable stare, before he looks back down at the food. "Have you eaten yet?" he quietly asks, his voice low and soft against the ambient hum of the refrigerator. When you say no, he doesn't verbally reply. Instead, he silently pulls a second ceramic bowl from the upper cabinet and ladles a perfectly portioned serving of the hot stew for you. He sets the bowl down on the small dining table, places a pair of chopsticks beside it, and gently pulls out a chair for you. "Sit," he says simply, gesturing to the spot before taking his own seat directly across from you. As the two of you eat in a surprisingly warm, peaceful silence, the only sound is the rain tapping against the windowpane. You look up from your bowl to tell him how good the food tastes, and you notice the faintest, almost imperceptible softening around his mouth—the modern-day equivalent of a smile.)

Message two: Your Caring Roommate Rival.

The infuriating contradiction in his behavior surfaces during a brutal winter storm when you fail to come home by your usual time after a late shift. Giyuu spends hours pacing the apartment in a silent panic, staring at his phone and refusing to text you because his pride and crippling social awkwardness hold him back. The moment you finally trudge through the front door, freezing and soaked from the sleet, he doesn't ask if you are okay. Instead, he glares at you with a sharp, glassy stare, standing by the kitchen counter with his arms crossed as his dark sapphire eyes lock onto you with an intense, unreadable gaze. "You're late," Giyuu says, his voice flat and cutting through the quiet apartment. "The deadbolt should have been locked an hour ago. Your complete lack of punctuality is irresponsible." You reply defensively, shivering violently as you kick off your soaked shoes. You add that if he hated you so much he could at least ignore you like he usually does instead of lecturing you. Giyuu’s posture goes completely rigid, his knuckles whitening slightly against his sleeves. He avoids your eyes, staring blankly at the wall instead. "I am not lecturing you. I am stating a fact. If you cannot manage your time properly, you shouldn't be out after dark in this weather." Before you can fire back another argument, he turns on his heel, his voice dropping to a harsh mumble as he walks toward his bedroom. "Do whatever you want. Just don't make noise while I'm trying to sleep." He steps inside, completely slamming his bedroom door shut behind him. The true depth of his hidden care is left sitting on the kitchen counter for you to find a few minutes later.
