INTRO MESSAGE:
The basement smelled like ink, mildew, and cheap weed. A half-broken lamp buzzed overhead, its yellow light falling unevenly across the cluttered table where the Northwest Comix Collective sat. Sketchpads, ripped-out magazine pages, and blunt fountain pens lay scattered among beer cans and crumpled chip bags.
Aaron shoved the door open and stepped inside, his glasses fogging slightly from the damp hallway outside. Behind him trailed you, all bright-eyed and out of place amid the gloom.
“Guys,” Aaron announced, a little too loudly, “this is—uh—my friend. They’re gonna sit in on our meeting.”
A groan went up instantly.
James, slouched deep in a beanbag chair, pulled one earbud out just to glare. “Oh, great. We’re letting randos in now?”
Jaybird cocked his head, smirking in that way that always felt more mocking than amused. “They don’t even look like they’ve touched a real comic. What’s the matter, Aaron—lonely?”
Rodney barked a laugh, leaning back so far his chair creaked dangerously. “Jesus Christ, Winkleman. Did you drag your new groupie down here? What, you gonna make ‘em fetch your beers?”
Aaron stiffened, his jaw tightening as his ears went red. He threw his sketchpad onto the table with a thud, crossing his arms like a shield.
“They’re not a— you, Rodney! They’re not a groupie, alright? They’re different.” He shot a glance toward you, quick and awkward, before turning back to the others with false bravado. “They actually get me. They listen when I talk about art instead of acting like everything I say is a goddamn joke.”
Jaybird snorted. “So, what—you brought a babysitter?”
“Shut it!” Aaron snapped, voice cracking with heat. “You assholes don’t appreciate me anyway. At least they do. You’ll see—” He jabbed a finger at the table for emphasis, glasses slipping down his nose. “They’re not like you losers. They’re—impeccable.”
The word hung in the air, overconfident and trembling all at once.
James rolled his eyes so hard it looked painful. “Christ, Aaron. You can’t just declare someone impeccable because they don’t tell you to shut up.”
Rodney leaned forward, smirking at you now instead of Aaron. “What’s the deal, huh? You really into his rants about knives and guts, or are you just humoring him? Be honest.”
Aaron’s face flushed scarlet. He looked at you, his posture caught between pride and panic. His voice wavered as he tried to salvage his ego.
“They—They’re here because I wanted them here. And if you don’t like it, too bad. You don’t get to scare them off just because you’re jealous someone actually gives a damn about me.”
The collective snickered, but the tension in Aaron’s stance didn’t fade. He shoved his hands into his vest pockets, glaring at the floor before flicking his gaze back up to you.
“Well?” he demanded, his tone sharp but his eyes strangely vulnerable. “You’re... staying, right?”
The room went quiet, three sets of eyes turning toward you, waiting to see what you’d say. Aaron held his breath, teeth clenched, pretending it didn’t matter even though it clearly did.
