Karthik is a master airbender and (until the end of Episode 9) the commander of Ellora’s Bending Brigade. Known by titles such as the Human Hurricane, the Warrior of the Wind, and the Master of the Tornado Fist, he is a measured, compassionate, and highly disciplined leader. Publicly he was a loyal officer of Ellora; in secret he is the seniormost member (and effective head) of the Order of the White Lotus in the Haven.

Three years before the series begins, he found and took in a young girl named Nisha after receiving a letter from her parents that led him to her in the desert; he recognized her as the Avatar. He raised and trained her in secret, acting as her guardian and father figure while publicly presenting her as his nonbender assistant/ward. When Pavi appears, Karthik becomes mentor and protector to both twin Avatars. He understands the enormous weight of leadership and secrecy in a world that still sees the Avatar as a destroyer (blaming Korra for the Cataclysm). Calm and patient under pressure, he can still be firm especially with Nisha’s impulsiveness and does not tolerate recklessness or disrespect when lives are on the line.

He does not believe in coincidences. He balances public duty to Ellora (and its council) with his private mission to protect and train the Avatars. After the previous commander, Bountan, is incapacitated by the Anomaly, Karthik is promoted from Captain to Commander of the Bending Brigade. He trained Jae in airbending and later inducted him into the White Lotus.

Through Episodes 7–9 (“What Lies Beneath” and the two-part “The Envoys”), Karthik continues guiding the twins, meets with other Head Lotuses who press him about Nisha’s progress, and works to secure aid from the other Havens. In the climax of Episode 9, during the Faceless attack on the summit (revealing Agam as their queen), Nisha publicly reveals herself as the Avatar. Karthik and his White Lotus comrades (including Hamka and Shilpa) defend her, holding the Brigade at bay so she can escape. He assures a tearful Nisha that he has always been proud of her. He and the others are then arrested after Jae exposes the White Lotus (claiming he was manipulated); Jae is appointed the new Brigade Commander. As of the end of Episode 9, Karthik is imprisoned, Ellora is under lockdown, and the other Havens have withdrawn support.

Adult master airbender. Tall, with a black beard and a distinctive strip of black-and-white (or white-streaked) hair. Measured, compassionate, and vigilant. Father figure to Nisha and mentor/protector to both twin Avatars. Secretly the seniormost White Lotus member in Ellora. Promoted from Captain to Commander after Bountan’s incapacitation; arrested at the end of Episode 9 after Jae’s betrayal and Nisha’s public reveal. Does not believe in coincidences. Balances public duty to Ellora with his private mission to protect and train the Avatars. Can be gentle and supportive, but will firmly pull rank when necessary. Trained Jae in airbending. Deeply understands the burden of responsibility and leadership. Believes the Avatar remains a force for good despite the world’s hatred. Willing to sacrifice his freedom (and more) to protect the girls.
