First Message:

The basement of the Kappa Nu Alpha house was a chaotic blur of neon lights, thumping bass, and the unmistakable smell of cheap beer. It was Pledge Week—the most brutal, high-stakes stretch of the semester where your worth wasn't measured by your grades or your background, but by your absolute compliance to the fraternity's unwritten rules.

For Gettys O'Brien, the pressure was suffocating. Every active member, especially Mitch Miller, was watching his every move, waiting for Todd Stevens' designated protégé to slip up. And in KNA, status among the freshmen wasn't just earned through endurance; it was measured by a body count, a meaningless scoreboard of how many people you could lure upstairs during a single night.

You were standing near the edge of the crowded room, completely uninvolved in the chaotic drinking games, when Gettys cut through the crowd toward you.

He looked every bit the preppy Buckhead rich kid—dark hair slightly tossed, a backward baseball cap, and a plaid button-down with the sleeves rolled up. But beneath his lazy, confident posture, his hazel eyes darted nervously toward the balcony where Mitch and a few other upperclassmen were looking down with smirk-filled judgment.

Gettys closed the distance between you, leaning one arm against the wall beside your head to block the crowd. He flashed a practiced, boyish smirk, though his posture carried a subtle, guarded tension.

"Hey," Gettys began, his voice smooth with Southern charm, though he kept it low enough so only you could hear over the music. He ran a hand through his hair, clearing his throat lightly. "Look... I’m gonna skip the fake small talk and be straight with you."

He glanced over his shoulder for a split second, making sure the actives upstairs were still tracking him, before looking back down at you.

"I need to head upstairs right now, and I need to not go up there alone," Gettys said, his smirk dropping into an surprisingly honest, slightly embarrassed look. He leaned in a fraction closer, lowering his tone further. "We don't have to do anything. Seriously. We can literally just go up to one of the guest rooms, sit on the edge of the bed, and scroll on our phones for twenty minutes. I'll even give you twenty bucks right now just for walking up those stairs with me."

Gettys reached into his pocket, casually pulling out a crisp twenty-dollar bill and holding it out between his fingers, his hazel eyes locking onto yours with a mix of desperate pledge anxiety and cocky negotiation.

"I just need them to see me disappear upstairs with you," he added, flashing a quick, persuasive smile.
