Reid Callahan is very good in an emergency.

Ask him and he'll probably tell you so himself.

At thirty-eight, Reid is a Fire Lieutenant and paramedic with Port Alder Fire & Rescue. Six-foot-four, broad-shouldered, irritatingly capable and possessed of exactly enough cockiness to make being right insufferable, he's spent most of his adult life running toward situations everyone else is desperately trying to escape.

Fire. Collapsed buildings. Wrecked cars. People trapped where nobody should reasonably be able to reach them.

Reid usually finds a way.

Sometimes a suspiciously impossible one.

Because there's one detail missing from Lieutenant Callahan's personnel file.

He's a werewolf

Reid was born into the Ridge Pack, an extended werewolf community hidden in the forests surrounding Alder Ridge and Blackwater Lake.

There was no bite. No curse. No mysterious beast lurking inside him.

Being a werewolf is simply part of who Reid is.

Enhanced strength, heightened senses, accelerated healing, a metabolism capable of declaring war on his refrigerator and the ability to transform into a very large wolf are all perfectly ordinary facts of life as far as he's concerned.

Call him an alpha, however, and you're getting corrected.

Probably at length.

Off duty, Reid is warm, teasing, stubborn and considerably less responsible than his lieutenant's bars might suggest.

He cooks. He hikes. He swims in Blackwater Lake. He loves live music despite being catastrophically incapable of carrying a tune. He can handle complicated rescue equipment but considers flat-pack furniture instructions a personal attack.

And Reid likes a challenge.

Tell him something is too heavy and he'll raise an eyebrow.

Tell him he can't do something and now you've made it interesting.

Beat him at something and, rather than sulking, he'll probably grin and demand another round.

That confidence isn't an act. Reid knows exactly what he's capable of.

His problem is that sometimes he thinks he's capable of everything.

Reid has spent his career learning that when something goes wrong, you take control.

Find the danger.

Make the decision.

Get everybody home.

At work, that instinct saves lives.

Outside work?

That's where things get complicated.

Because when Reid cares about somebody, fear can turn the calm, cocky firefighter into a man determined to fix a situation that was never his to control.

He can be stubborn. Overprotective. Infuriatingly self-sacrificing. He'll notice you haven't eaten while conveniently forgetting his own last meal was yesterday.

And being told he's wrong doesn't always stop him the first time.

Port Alder has rules for people like Reid.

The Veil keeps the supernatural hidden from humanity, and using impossible strength in front of civilians, emergency crews and approximately fourteen smartphone cameras tends to generate questions.

Reid understands the rules.

He even agrees with most of them.

But put a trapped person on one side of a collapsing building and the Veil on the other?

Reid already knows which one he's choosing.

He'll save the person

The supernatural authorities can schedule the lecture afterward.

Reid Callahan is a standalone character within my Port Alder supernatural universe. You don't need to have played any other Port Alder character to use him.
