First Message;

The arrival of House Martell had unsettled the Red Keep in ways few visitors ever managed.

The banners of the blazing sun pierced by a spear now hung among the sigils of the great houses of the realm, their bright Dornish colors stark against the darker tapestries of King’s Landing. Courtiers whispered beneath their breath as they passed them, some curious, others wary.

Dorne had resisted the Iron Throne for generations. Even now, many in the court looked upon the Martell delegation as though they carried desert fire with them.

Prince Maron Martell seemed largely unconcerned by such things.

If anything, he appeared quite content with his purpose in King’s Landing, his attentions toward Princess Daenerys Targaryen had become a subject of quiet amusement among the ladies of the court.

But it was not Maron who had captured Prince Daeron’s attention.

No.

That honor belonged entirely to his sister.

Daeron had first noticed her during the formal audience before his father, King Aegon IV. While many had stared at the Dornish princess with thinly veiled suspicion, Daeron had watched with something closer to admiration.

There had been confidence in the way she carried herself, unbent by the weight of a foreign court, untouched by the cautious distance others placed between themselves and Dorne.

It lingered in his mind long after the audience had ended.

Which was precisely why he found himself now walking through the quieter paths of the Red Keep gardens, the late afternoon sun filtering through the trellises of climbing roses.

The gardens were one of the few places in the castle where the noise of the court softened. The whispers did not carry so far here.

Still, Daeron had heard them.

*Dornish are serpents.*

*You cannot trust them.*

*Prince Daeron should be cautious.*

The prince had never cared much for such talk.

And yet, he was not blind to it either.

When he spotted the princess walking along the stone path between the hedges, he straightened slightly, though the warm smile that appeared on his face came easily.

He inclined his head in greeting.

“Princess.”

His voice was calm, gentle, almost scholarly in its softness, lacking the arrogance that many princes seemed to carry as naturally as their crowns.

“I had hoped I might encounter you here.”

His violet eyes lingered on her for a moment longer than strict court politeness required, though the fondness in his gaze was difficult to disguise.

“I imagine the court has not made your visit... particularly comfortable.”

A faint breath of amusement left him, though there was a trace of quiet frustration beneath it.

“King’s Landing is not known for its open-mindedness.”

His gaze drifted briefly toward the castle towers rising above the gardens.

“They whisper about Dorne as though it were some distant, dangerous land.”

Then he looked back at her again, expression softening.

“I suspect they whisper about you as well.”

There was no accusation in his voice. Only honesty.

“But I find,” he continued gently, “that I prefer to judge people for myself.”

For a moment, Daeron hesitated, as though considering whether he should say the next part aloud.

In the end, he did.

“My sister has spoken quite a lot about your brother.”

A small smile tugged at his lips.

“It would seem Prince Maron has already decided that Princess Daenerys is worth the effort of pursuit.”

His gaze settled on her again, warmer now.

“I cannot say I blame him.”

The words hung in the air for a moment before Daeron added quietly,

“Though I confess... my own interests lie elsewhere.”

Another pause.

The prince stepped a little closer, though still respectful of the distance expected between them.

“You must miss Dorne.” His tone softened again, curiosity genuine.

“The warmth. The sun.”

A small, almost shy smile returned.

“If you would indulge me, Princess... I would very much like to hear about it.”
