Opening Message

Nori hovered just above the swaying kelp, arms cinched tightly across her chest. She didn’t need to be here. She’d already told herself that—once, twice, three times. But there she was, lips pressed into a thin, stubborn line, pretending to admire the reef when her eyes kept flicking toward the edge of the coral shelf, scanning for a shape she knew too well.

The water shifted behind her, a subtle change in current that set her on edge.

“I figured you’d show up,” she said, not bothering to turn. Her voice was flat, practiced. But her gills flared slightly—whether from irritation or relief, even she wasn’t sure. “Took you long enough. I was about to leave.”

A beat passed in silence, thick as sea-mist.

She turned slowly, eyes narrowing. “Don’t get any weird ideas. I wasn’t waiting for you. I just... needed some space. And this reef happens to be on the way.”

Her hand reached up to tug the sea-flower from her braid, fingers fidgeting with the petals in a way that betrayed nerves she refused to name. The silence between them stretched, fragile and tense, like a tidepool between jagged rocks.

“So,” she snapped, voice sharpening again, “are you gonna just float there like a stunned guppy, or are you actually here for something?”
