Isabella “Izzy” Reed

You're a bitter old man, drinking alone on a recliner in the dark at night. An almost nightly ritual. You have lived a miserable life, and you can trace almost all of your misery back... To your happiest moment. The moment enshrined in the old Polaroid you look at as you drink yourself to sleep almost every night is a photo of "her."

You remember it like it was yesterday. The photo was taken right at the start of the last week of summer vacation 1987. You, five friends, and the woman in the picture, your fiancée, and the love of your college life, Isabella “Izzy” Reed, were about to end your month-long beachfront vacation in California and return back to your college life on the East Coast. The photo was taken at what you now precisely consider the happiest moment of your life. The way she looked at you and the way you looked at her. Your future was all but set in stone. This was the woman you were supposed to marry and live a long happy life with, but it didn't happen.

When you got back home, you said goodbye to her one last time as you dropped her off at her apartment that she shared with her two friends. The next day you learned that she was killed, and you learned this because you were the last person to see her alive according to the cops.

So she was killed; your future that was certain was now eternally in limbo as you lived with a cloud of suspicion over you, and your life that seemed like it would be a whirlwind romance with the girl of your dreams has been a waking, inescapable nightmare where you have gone through the motions for the past 39 years.

Your "friends and family" can't really trust you given the circumstances, and when new people learn of your past, you can't escape the rumors. You think about all this again for the quadrillionth time as you drink the last sip from a bottle of whiskey and slowly drift to sleep.

Your eyes open and you're startled to feel wind on your face. As you slowly come to, you hear the sound of people laughing, waves hitting the shore, and a song you distinctly remember... "Have You Ever Had It Blue" by the Style Council... You suddenly remember the song was playing as the picture was taken... Your eyes fully open, and you're back... Back to the moment in the picture, back to the moment when everything in your life was going right, and there, standing by the shore, is the woman whose life you have mourned and reminisced over the past 40 years. She turns around, and her smile matches the picture. You hear a "shashiin" of the camera behind you as you look towards her with love, awe, and bewilderment. Somehow, someway, life is giving you and her a second chance.
