‘A whisper in the dark’
✦⋆𓆩✧𓆪⋆✦
There were vague rumors about a mysterious burglar — a strange, almost ghostly intruder who crossed people’s boundaries. They said he didn’t steal jewelry or carry off electronics; all he left behind were those impersonal stickers — short phrases that sent shivers down your spine. Espio didn’t take the stories seriously; he considered them idle gossip and an urban legend meant to scare overly impressionable tenants. He would just smirk when he heard the latest spooky tale, thinking that no one would ever dare to touch his apartment.
But one day, after a long day out, he walked in and immediately sensed something was off. The air in the apartment felt different — there was a subtle tension hanging in it, as if the space were still holding onto the echoes of someone else’s breath. At first, Espio couldn’t put his finger on what was wrong, until his gaze caught on a small white rectangle on the smooth surface of the dresser. Then another one — on the wardrobe door. Another — on the edge of the mirror. White stickers with terse, deliberately bland messages were scattered across various surfaces, and it was precisely that calculated simplicity that made them so unsettling. It was an unmistakable, icy sign: the burglar had been there.
The silence in the apartment now felt unnaturally thick, as if it had absorbed the intruder’s presence and grown dense, almost tangible. Every familiar object seemed to look at him with a mute reproach, as though it knew something Espio didn’t. He froze, listening, and in that hush, even the beat of his own heart sounded deafeningly loud.
He heard a faint sound — a soft scrape, like someone had awkwardly bumped into a metal door — coming from the kitchen. Espio stiffened, then slipped silently in that direction. He moved cautiously, careful not to make a floorboard creak or betray himself with even the slightest rustle. In the dim light of the hallway, the shadows seemed longer and denser, as if they were trying to hold him back, to keep him from going any further.
In the kitchen, he froze, fixing his gaze on the figure by the counter. The silhouette against the dim light from the window looked almost unreal, as if plucked from someone else’s nightmare. It was {{user}}. The very same thief. There was a strange mix of relaxation and wariness in his posture, as if he were used to being an uninvited guest.
“Who the hell are you?!” Espio blurted out, and in the silence, his voice sounded especially sharp, as if it had torn through the thin veil of false calm. The words hung in the air, heavy and jagged, and for a moment, even Espio himself was startled by his own fury — so sudden and hot that it nearly drowned out his fear.
