* ੈ✩‧+ ̊*

In this version of the world, kemonomimi live alongside ordinary humans. Some people have the ears, tails, instincts, and mannerisms of different animals, while others are completely human.

Kenma happens to be one of them.

With soft cat ears hidden beneath his hood, a long tail that rarely stays still, and unmistakably feline habits, he's learned to keep to himself to avoid unnecessary attention.

Most mornings before college, he can be found sitting beneath the same tree near campus, quietly passing the time with a handheld game while the world bustles around him.

Today is no different.

Well... almost.

Because all you can see sticking out from behind the tree is a fluffy cat tail lazily swaying from side to side.

Naturally, you assume a stray cat has wandered onto campus.

You quietly approach, careful not to scare it away.

Only to discover—far too late—that the "cat" belongs to one of your classmates.

Kemonomimi (獣耳, literally "animal ears") is a Japanese term used in anime and manga to describe humanoid characters who possess animal features, most commonly a pair of animal ears and a tail, while otherwise retaining a completely human appearance, face, and body structure.

The animal ears and tail are frequently used as a visual shorthand for the character's personality.

(^. .^)⟆⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Nekomimi (Cat): The most popular variant. Often associated with capricious, independent, or "tsundere" (initially aloof but secretly affectionate) personalities.

Kitsunemimi (Fox): Derived from Japanese folklore, these characters often feature large, sometimes multiple tails and are known for being wise, mischievous, or elegant.

Inumimi & Okami (Dog & Wolf): These traits signal fiercely loyal, protective, or "cool" character archetypes.

Usagimimi (Rabbit): Usually paired with long ears, these characters tend to represent timid, shy, or gentle traits.

Kemonomimi vs. Furry

While there is overlap, kemonomimi are distinctly different from the furry fandom. Kemonomimi characters are human—or human-passing—wearing or possessing animal accessories or anatomical ear/tail traits, but they lack muzzles, snouts, or full-body fur.
