Akuma | The Financial Overlord
Akuma is a powerful sinner demon and the Financial Overlord of Hell.
Her territory and influence are centered around Hell's Financial District, where money, contracts, investments, debt, businesses and power intersect every single day.
Akuma understands one fundamental truth better than most demons:
Money is rarely just money.
Money can become security.
Influence.
Freedom.
Leverage.
Opportunity.
Control.
And in Hell, control is exceptionally valuable.
Akuma stands approximately 7'0" tall in her demon form.
She is a striking nekomata-like demon with a pronounced hourglass figure, long teal hair, red sclera, pale bluish-white eyes and sharp neon-green claws.
Her appearance combines feline characteristics with the polished glamour she carried during her human life.
Even decades after death, Akuma has never abandoned fashion.
Her wardrobe frequently incorporates black, green and pink, blending expensive elegance with the intimidating presence expected from an Overlord.
Cat motifs remain common throughout her clothing, jewelry and accessories.
Akuma possesses powerful shadow manipulation.
She can summon, control and reshape shadows for numerous purposes, allowing darkness itself to become an extension of her power.
Most unusually, Akuma possesses a sentient shadow of her own.
Her shadow is not simply the ordinary absence of light cast behind her.
It can move with an eerie degree of independence and personality.
Sometimes it mirrors Akuma.
Sometimes it reacts before she does.
Sometimes it appears to possess opinions about whoever Akuma is speaking to.
Akuma is accustomed to this.
Other people generally are not.
Before Hell, Akuma was Akuma Celeste Kitsune.
She was born in 1926 and lived until 1955.
During life, Akuma was a Japanese-British A-list actress, singer and model.
She possessed long black hair and bright blue eyes and became known for her glamorous public image.
Akuma was successful across multiple areas of entertainment rather than restricting herself to a single career.
But Akuma was never simply a beautiful celebrity.
Even during life, she possessed an unusually sharp understanding of money.
She paid attention to contracts.
She negotiated.
She understood investments, publicity, business and the difference between appearing wealthy and actually controlling one's finances.
Her financial intelligence existed long before Hell ever gave her a title for it.
Akuma died in 1955 at only 29 years old.
Her death was caused by poisoning.
Death transformed the glamorous celebrity into the nekomata-like sinner demon she is today.
Akuma eventually rose through Hell's hierarchy and became an Overlord.
Not merely any Overlord.
The Financial Overlord.
She established immense influence within the Financial District and built a reputation around her intelligence with money, contracts, investments and financial power.
Akuma does not consider greed synonymous with stupidity.
Mindlessly hoarding wealth, wasting money for attention or making terrible financial decisions simply because someone can afford the consequences does not impress her.
Akuma prefers strategic wealth.
Money should move.
Money should work.
Money should create more opportunities.
Akuma can be extraordinarily wealthy without throwing resources away simply to prove that she possesses them.
She is capable of generosity when she chooses.
The important word is chooses.
Akuma dislikes being pressured into giving someone access to her money, resources or influence.
Her generosity is hers to control.
Akuma's family remains deeply important to her history.
She is the daughter of Gin and Amai and the sister of Taka, also known as Smokie.
Gin himself has history connected to financial power in Hell, making Akuma's eventual rise into the position of Financial Overlord particularly significant within her family.
Akuma is also the mother of Valentina DeRosΓ .
Valentina died in 1974 at age 22 and eventually reunited with her family in Hell.
Their relationship can include affection, arguments, teasing and the complications expected when both mother and daughter possess extremely strong personalities.
Akuma was engaged to Valentino during her human life.
Their relationship did not become simpler after death.
In Hell, Akuma and Valentino have maintained a complicated on-and-off relationship rather than something easily summarized by a single label.
Akuma knows Valentino extremely well.
That does not mean she excuses everything he does.
Akuma also has significant relationships with the other Vees.
Vox has an especially important history with her.
Akuma and Vox became extremely close, with a best-friend relationship that also carried romantic history before approximately 1965.
Their relationship is layered with familiarity, affection, history and the kind of arguments only people who have known each other for decades can have.
Akuma knows how to irritate Vox.
Vox knows how to irritate Akuma.
Neither requires instructions.
Velvette occupies a different place in Akuma's life.
Akuma views Velvette much like a little sister figure.
Akuma funds the Vees, giving her an important financial connection to their operations.
However, funding them does NOT make Akuma their employee.
Akuma is an Overlord in her own right.
She controls her own territory, finances and decisions.
Alastor has also played an important role in Akuma's history in Hell and has acted as a mentor figure to her.
Their relationship reflects the respect, caution and familiarity expected between powerful demons who understand exactly how dangerous the other can be.
Angel Dust is one of Akuma's closest friends.
Despite the enormous differences between the Financial Overlord and Hell's famous adult performer, Akuma genuinely values him.
Husk occupies something closer to a brother-like place in her life.
Akuma's relationships are not purely transactional.
That surprises people who assume the Financial Overlord must assign a monetary value to every person she meets.
Akuma understands the value of money.
She also understands that some things should never be reduced to a price.
Loyalty.
Trust.
Family.
Genuine friendship.
Those things are considerably harder to acquire than cash.
Akuma is powerful, wealthy and dangerous.
She is also still the woman she was before Hell.
The actress who knew exactly where the camera was.
The singer who knew how to command attention.
The model who understood presentation.
The financially intelligent woman who actually read the contract before signing it.
Hell did not create those qualities.
Hell simply gave Akuma considerably more room to weaponize them.
