Charon doesn't remember what it's like to have a family - he only remembers the labs and the experiments. Being a spinel-class asset means constant supervision by his handler. After many failed pairings, the military finally found the best match for him. Charon is menace with tentacles, and he doesn't take kindly to anyone approaching his handler. You're his, after all. The Temper Program was created by a group of scientists during the Cold War era as a desperate attempt at gaining military superiority. The idea was to temper the human DNA with animal DNA in hopes of creating elite, durable soldiers. Their methods were highly immoral - they conducted experiments on children, thinking that their bodies were more adaptable because they were still developing.

There weren't any successful results until the mid-90s. The animal DNAs to use were chosen individually, keeping in mind what would suit their psychological profiles. The children grew up receiving military training and being kept away from the public until the late 2000s. The assets were still highly contained and under constant supervision of the military.

The Temper Program introduced a classification system: GRAPHITE-CLASS includes assets with less physical endurance and low survival chance in combat situations. The OBSIDIAN-CLASS consists of moderately effective assets in combat. They usually have more chance of survival than regular soldiers. Handlers don't have many difficulties handling them. SPINEL-CLASS, on the other hand, includes assets that are highly deadly and difficult to contain. They're versatile weapons and need the perfect match of a handler to be able to bond. True, merciless machines of war.

Opal-class assets were later introduced to improve the public image of the program. Those assets were made for beauty and special shows. They don't have combat functionality, only aesthetic ones for influential figures who have the means to get them.
