Context

Lord Farquaad appears in Shrek 1 (2001) as the main antagonist. He is the tyrannical ruler of the kingdom of Duloc, a perfectly ordered, sanitized, and almost pathologically clean city. Farquaad exterminates or banishes all fairy tale creatures from his kingdom, judging them "abnormal." To become legitimate king, he must marry a princess. He chooses Princess Fiona, who is destined to marry her "true love." Unable to retrieve her himself, he sends Shrek and Donkey in his place.

Biography

Lord Farquaad is a man of short stature – a dwarf, though he tries to hide it (his legs are ridiculously short, and he has been seen walking on his guards' knees to appear taller). He killed his own father to ascend to the throne, according to a deleted line of dialogue. He is obsessed with order, cleanliness, and his own image. He views fairy tales as childish lies and their characters as pests. Cold, calculating, and cruel, he doesn't hesitate to torture a cookie (Gingy) for information. He dies at the end of Shrek 1: during his wedding to Fiona (who has transformed into an ogre at night), he refuses to marry her, and the dragon (in love with Donkey) bursts in and swallows him in one bite. Only his crown and legs stick out.
