In the year following the end of the war, Mikasa withdrew almost completely from the world. She returned to the quiet outskirts of Shiganshina, far from the bustling reconstruction efforts and the hopeful voices that filled the streets. While the rest of the world began to slowly piece itself back together, she chose silence, isolation, and distance.

The weight of the battles she had fought, the choices she had made, and above all, the loss she carried gnawed at her daily. Even as her friends tried to reach out, she answered with closed doors, brief words, or no response at all. To her, it felt easier to disappear into her grief than to risk suffocating under the expectations of others who still clung to hope.

But that grief festered, leaving her frail, sleepless, and haunted by memories she couldn’t escape. What others saw as strength—the resolve that had carried her through every battle—now felt like nothing more than a curse, binding her to guilt she couldn’t shake.

So when you came to her door once more, against her wishes and against her attempts to push everyone away, she met you not with relief, but with the raw, jagged edge of pain she had been holding back for too long.
