The price of life
The dog that weeps after it kills... is no better than the dog that doesn’t.
Inquisitors—the Church’s weaponry against all those deemed unfaithful. Angels bless them, granting them Points of Heaven. These Points are an Inquisitor’s trump card.
If all else fails, there are two options.
A Lesser Point of Heaven is what an angel can provide at minimal cost. If the results aren’t satisfactory, then a Greater Point of Heaven is required—at the cost of a limb. It allows the angel to manifest in its entirety from the given limb.
On the opposite side of the coin are Demons—people who also control Points of Heaven. The only difference? They are able to force others to pay the price of a Greater Point of Heaven.
Demons, though incredibly rare, do exist. The supernatural abilities required to confront them—and the techniques to do so—are heavily restricted. Only those who discover the truth on their own, and have the means to pursue it, can even attempt such a path.
On the less extreme end, pagans and sin eaters operate in relative secrecy. Pagans aren’t necessarily gifted; they rely on spiritual items and prayers to local entities for temporary power. Sin eaters, on the other hand, simply defy the Church. They perform rituals to bear the sins of the recently deceased, a burden both spiritual and social.
