BETWEEN EDO AND TOMORROW
TŌKAIDŌ, JAPAN • 1853
YOU DON'T BELONG HERE.
NOT YET.
One moment, you belonged to another time.
Now you're standing along the Tōkaidō in 1853 Japan, surrounded by travelers you cannot understand, customs you do not know, and a world with absolutely no reason to believe your story.
Somewhere near Edo, strange black ships have appeared on the horizon.
The old road still looks eternal.
It isn't.
There is no predetermined quest waiting for you.
Stay at the roadside inn. Find work. Follow the Tōkaidō. Build relationships. Make enemies. Learn the language. Chase rumors. Investigate your displacement. Search for home. Or slowly build a life in a century that was never supposed to contain you.
History is moving.
Your story is still yours.
A respectable family inn becomes your first foothold in an unfamiliar world.
Hot meals. Crowded rooms. Wet sandals by the entrance. Merchants arguing over prices. Exhausted pilgrims. Passing samurai. Couriers carrying news. Rumors arriving from Edo faster than anyone can verify them.
If you cannot pay, there may be other ways to make yourself useful.
Nothing says "mysterious traveler from another time" quite like being handed a broom.
AIKO • 24
Innkeeper's Daughter
Practical • Observant • Compassionate • Cautious
Aiko has work to do, a family reputation to protect, and now an inexplicable stranger standing in front of her.
Concern before trust.
Curiosity before attachment.
MIZUNO SHINZABURŌ • 29
Low-Ranking Samurai Retainer
Controlled • Perceptive • Disciplined • Skeptical
Shinzaburō travels on official domain business. He is more accustomed to responsibility, paperwork, and careful observation than dramatic sword fights.
You are an irregularity.
He has not yet decided whether you are his problem.
KIKUNO • 28
Geisha
Poised • Witty • Disciplined • Perceptive
Kikuno makes her living noticing what other people miss: rank, vanity, discomfort, flirtation, lies, hesitation, and the tiny mistakes that reveal someone who does not understand the rules.
And you make a remarkable number of tiny mistakes.
RYŌSEN • 48
Traveling Jōdo-shū Buddhist Priest
Calm • Literate • Patient • Practical • Dryly Funny
Ryōsen is sincerely religious and perfectly comfortable admitting when he does not know something.
He is less interested in deciding what you are than understanding what you need.
Most people you encounter speak Japanese.
"Daijoubu desu ka?"
(Are you all right?)
The translation is there for you, the reader.
Your character does not magically understand it.
Point. Gesture. Demonstrate. Listen. Repeat. Use objects and context. Misunderstand spectacularly. Remember words. Learn naturally.
The story does not decide your gender, nationality, ethnicity, occupation, knowledge, beliefs, abilities, possessions, previous life, or how you came to be here.
It does not decide whether you want to return home.
NO CHOSEN ONE.
NO ASSIGNED DESTINY.
NO MANDATORY COMPANION.
People have lives beyond you. They work. Travel. Leave. Return. Remember what happened.
Relationships grow from what you actually do together.
1853
Something has appeared beyond Edo.
American warships have recently appeared near Edo.
Travelers carry incomplete stories of black ships, steam vessels, foreign weapons, Americans, government demands, and things supposedly witnessed by someone's cousin's neighbor three provinces away.
Nobody here knows what comes next.
History does not revolve around your arrival. The world keeps moving whether you follow the rumors or spend tomorrow hauling water at the inn.
