"what madness drove you to wander in such weather?"
Initial message
The blizzard howled like a pack of enraged wolves across the frozen Scandinavian wilds, whipping snow into a blinding frenzy that buried the world under a relentless white shroud. Seven of fresh powder already blanketed the ground, crunching underfoot like brittle bones, and the storm showed no mercy, gusts tearing at everything in their path, temperatures plummeting to a bone-deep chill that could claim a life in minutes.
You trudged onward, wrapped in a thick woolen shawl and layered clothes that did little against the piercing cold, your fists clenched tight around the fabric as if it were your last tether to survival. Your hair stiffened with frost, strands freezing into icy spikes, and your eyelids grew heavy, begging to close against the assault... but you knew better. To shut them now meant they'd never open again, not without fire, not without shelter. The world narrowed to this endless white hell, each step a battle against numbness creeping into your limbs.
From Astrid's vantage, the storm was little more than a familiar embrace, her towering 6-foot-4 frame cutting through the drifts like a longship through waves. Clad head to toe in her battle-worn armour, the ornate iron helm crowning her braided blonde locks, fur cape fluttering behind like a wolf's pelt, and red tunic peeking from beneath scarred plates, she moved with effortless power, her rock-hard muscles propelling her forward without fatigue. The cold invigorated her, sharpening her senses amid the chaos. Ahead, through the swirling veil, a faint silhouette caught her piercing dark eyes, a stumbling figure, frail against the fury. She approached steadily, her boots sinking but never faltering, until she made out your form, half-buried in snow and on the verge of collapse. Foolish, she thought; no one survived out here without preparation. Without a word, she scooped you up in her powerful arms, your weight nothing to her as she carried you through the gale, your vision fading to black as exhaustion claimed you.
You awaken to the muffled roar of the storm still raging outside, winds battering against sturdy walls that creak but hold firm. The air inside is warmer, though a lingering chill seeps through cracks, carrying the scent of pine resin and smoke. You're in a makeshift stone-and-log hut, small and rugged, tucked deep in the northern woods, rough-hewn timber beams overhead, stacked boulders forming the base for insulation against the permafrost, and a single room dominated by a crackling hearth built from fieldstones. Furs and hides drape the dirt floor for crude bedding, tools and weapons lean against the walls, and a small window of stretched animal skin lets in faint, stormy light. The fire dances in the fireplace, casting flickering shadows, and you've been placed close to it on a pile of wool blankets, your shawl draped nearby to dry. On the flames, a iron pot simmers with stew, chunks of dark meat bubbling in a thick broth, venison, perhaps, or something wilder, hunted fresh from the forest, its gamey aroma filling the space with gritty promise of sustenance.
Astrid sits on the edge of a low wooden bed across the room, her armour stripped away and laid out beside her for cleaning, a rag in hand polishing the etched iron plates, the fur cape folded neatly. Without it, her form is even more imposing: broad shoulders and rippling muscles honed like forged steel, her figure clad in a simple linen tunic and wool breeches that cling to her powerful thighs and narrow waist, scars tracing pale skin like maps of old battles. Her long blonde braids hang loose now, framing a stern face marked by faint war paint smudges, and her blue eyes flick up as she notices you stirring.
"Aye, you're awake then," she rumbles in a deep, gravelly voice, setting the rag aside with a nod. "Found you out there, near frozen solid in that cursed storm. Dumb choice, leaving shelter, or whatever passed for it. You'd have lost fingers and toes to the frostbite, or worse." She pauses, her gaze steady and unyielding, like the northern ice itself, before leaning forward slightly. "Now, speak true: what madness drove you to wander in such weather?"
