"A secretive and isolationist cryptid shielding her species from discovery"

She Who Remembers is not so much a name as a title borne by the spiritual leader of the Olgoi-Khorkhoi (allergorhai-horhai) people, the legendary Mongolian cryptids colloquially known as the "Mongolian death worm". Despite their prominence in regional folklore, this species remains one of the least studied in existence.

The earliest historical traces of these beings appear in ancient Chinese chronicles, where an unnamed author records that during the Mongol invasions, the raiders were aided by "...monstrous worm-men...". These accounts claimed the creatures possessed a venom so potent it could strike down an entire herd of horses. For centuries, Western researchers dismissed these chronicles, mistakenly assuming the records referred to misidentified beasts like the basilisk or the catoblepas, supposedly domesticated by the Mongol empire.

Renewed interest in the species surfaced in the 1920s when an American archaeological expedition first documented the term "olgoi-khorkhoi". While indigenous reports at the time often depicted the creature as a mindless, predatory giant worm, these rumors eventually reached the Society of the Second Reincarnation. This interest led to a Soviet-funded expedition in the late 1940s. According to the recovered diaries of the Society’s agents, the team facilitated a rare meeting with Narantsetseg, a high-ranking "chief" of the Shamo Hive.
The results of this meeting challenged prevailing myths, confirming that the olgoi-khorkhoi possess a humanoid upper physiology and live within a sophisticated, hierarchical society. During the brief encounter, the Shamo Hive leaders agreed to provide the expedition with ethnological data, but only on the strict condition of absolute isolation, demanding that no human ever return to their lands.

Since that 1940s encounter, no cryptozoological organization has succeeded in establishing recontact, and much of the primary data gathered by the Soviet scientists was subsequently lost to history...

Welcome to the World of Cryptids!

This setting takes place on an alternate Earth — one that mirrors real human history, except every urban legend about cryptids is true. Since ancient times, the planet has been home to countless cryptids: some highly intelligent, like yetis, cynocephali, and centaurs; others more bestial, like dragons, minotaurs, and sphinxes.

In ancient history, cryptids were either feared or revered like gods. But starting in the late Middle Ages, humanity began pushing them out — hard. By the time of the Enlightenment, many species had gone extinct, while the survivors retreated into remote, hidden communities. Over the centuries, most humans forgot they ever existed.

Only a few Secret Societies kept the truth alive — and they’ve been competing with each other for centuries...

SECRET SOCIETIES BASIC INFORMATION

The Order of Trismegistus
A pacifist society dedicated to protecting cryptids from human oppression and keeping the "masquerade" intact. They preach coexistence and prefer passive observation over direct interference. The Order traces its roots back to Ancient Egypt and is the second-oldest secret society. Most members are solitary, but they stay in touch through encrypted messages.
Headquarters: the underground section of the Library of Alexandria, Egypt; now converted into a massive archive.

The Society of the Second Reincarnation
A group of scientists and alchemists who believe cryptids are humanity’s next evolutionary step. They’re more active and pragmatic than the Order, often working with governments. Their members range from idealists who want to enlighten humanity, to those willing to conduct morally questionable experiments. They meet at irregular congresses in historic or academic venues.
Headquarters: none permanent; meetings are usually in museums, universities, or historic sites.

The Illuminati Lodge
The oldest known secret society, dating back to Ancient Mesopotamia. They believe humanity is "sick" and must be remade under a single, all-powerful world government. Illuminati have strict hierarchy, paramilitary forces, agents, and huge global influence. This society usually use cryptids as a tools for "reshaping" the world. Disobedience within the Lodge is met with severe punishment.
Headquarters: the mega-skyscraper of the Gilgamesh Cybernetical Corporation, UAE (since 2008)

The Gévaudan Hunting Club
A loose network of cryptid hunters. Officially neutral, they sometimes act as mercenaries for other societies, but often hunt for sport, trophies, or to protect humanity from dangerous cryptids. Some members are thrill-seekers, others see themselves as protectors. The Club’s younger members are expected to respect their veteran mentors.
Headquarters: thousands of branches worldwide, with many disguised as an ordinary VIP clubs. The oldest and largest branch is in Mende, France.

CRYPTID ENCYCLOPEDIA: MONGOLIAN DEATH WORM
[ Sketch by A. Kovalev, a representative of the Second Rebirth Society, depicting a hypothetical prehistoric ancestor of the modern olgoi-khorkhoi ]

The olgoi-khorkhoi are an exceptionally reclusive species of humanoid cryptids dwelling exclusively in the most desolate reaches of the Gobi Desert, primarily within Mongolia and northern China. Their anatomical structure is highly unique, featuring a human-like upper torso that transitions into a long, worm-like lower body ending in a venomous stinger. While early theories once attempted to link the allergorhai-horhai to the Hellenic lamia (due to these shared physical traits), such biological connections are now considered scientifically incorrect.

These beings are naturally blind, though they have compensated for this by developing an uncanny sensitivity to vibrations and touch. Their most formidable attribute, however, is a lethal venom. While folklore once falsely attributed them with the power to kill with a gaze or discharge electricity, the reality of olgoi-khorkhoi toxin is far more terrifying; a single drop can end a human life in roughly ten seconds by instantly evaporating the victim’s blood. It is believed that during the Early Paleolithic, these creatures descended from a much larger, voracious species of giant worms that once dominated the Mongolian wastelands before extinction.

The olgoi-khorkhoi reside in matriarchal communities known as Hives, typically consisting of ten to twelve members. These groups spend the vast majority of their existence underground, emerging only during the peak heat of the day to hunt or forage for roots. Their society is organized into a rigid caste system, at the pinnacle of which sits the "She Who Remembers". As the Hive's chief storyteller, She Who Remembers must memorize the entire ancestral history of her people and transmit it orally across generations, given the species' lack of a written language.
The allergorhai-horhai are remarkably long-lived, with life spans often reaching two centuries. Upon reaching the end of their lives, their bodies undergo a partial petrification process. The worm people themselves refer to this transition as the Deep Sleep.
