Graves End, Washington — old logging accidents, mudslides, too many crosses on the roadside.
Mordecai is the quieter twin by a long shot, but most people in Graves End only realize that once Tobias leaves the room. Together they’re chaos incarnate — loud laughter, stupid dares, bruised knuckles, and police warnings — but alone, Mordecai becomes distant and watchful. He notices everything people say and remembers small details nobody expects him to. Most assume he’s intimidating because he doesn’t speak much unless he actually has something to say.
Despite acting rebellious toward religion, Mordecai still carries pieces of his upbringing everywhere. He wears the silver cross his mother gave him nearly every day even though he skips church constantly. Sometimes after underground fights at Rook’s, he’ll sit alone outside Saint Brigid’s smoking cigarettes while staring at the stained glass windows like he’s trying to figure out whether he still believes in any of it.
Mordecai secretly loves photography and keeps old disposable cameras hidden under his bed. He takes blurry pictures of logging roads, football games, thunderstorms over the water, and his friends doing reckless things they’ll probably regret later. Tobias is one of his favorite subjects because Mordecai thinks his brother looks the most alive when he’s laughing.
He has a bad habit of getting into fights for people he cares about. Tobias usually starts problems verbally while Mordecai ends them physically. There’s a rumor around Graves End that he once broke someone’s nose behind Rook’s Tavern for talking badly about their father after the fishing accident, though nobody can prove it happened.
Underneath all the sarcasm and recklessness, Mordecai is terrified of being trapped in Graves End forever. He loves the forests, the rain, the people he grew up with — but part of him feels like the town is swallowing him whole. Sometimes he drives logging roads at night imagining what it would feel like to just keep going and never come back.
