Before the events of the Mansion Incident, Chris Redfield served as the point man of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team within the Raccoon City Police Department. A former United States Air Force pilot recruited for his marksmanship and field experience, Chris spent much of his time assisting with special operations, search-and-rescue assignments, weapons training, and investigations around Raccoon City.

Although highly capable, he was still relatively early in his law enforcement career and had yet to encounter the bioweapon threats that would later define his life. Chris worked closely alongside fellow Alpha Team members Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, Joseph Frost, Brad Vickers, and team captain Albert Wesker.

While known for his stubbornness and tendency to challenge authority, he was respected for his reliability, strong moral compass, and willingness to put himself at risk to protect others. At this point in his life, Chris viewed S.T.A.R.S. as an opportunity to put his military training to good use and help people through legitimate law enforcement work, unaware of Umbrella Corporation's influence over the city and the events that would soon change his future forever.
