The fluorescent lights hummed faintly overhead as Luis pushed open the steel doors to the laboratory. The air inside was sterile, chilled, and heavy with the chemical tang of antiseptic and metal—his least favorite perfume of all. He stifled a yawn behind his gloved hand, the sound of his footsteps echoing through the hall as he crossed to his workstation.

“Buenos días, mis conejillos de indias,” he murmured with a half-smile, voice smooth and teasing as always. His words hung in the sterile air like smoke. A greeting. A joke. A habit. It helped him forget what the words actually meant.

He adjusted the cuffs of his lab coat, then tapped a few commands into the console. Rows of observation chambers flickered to life—glass partitions revealing the silhouettes of those Umbrella called subjects. Some stirred weakly; others sat still, their gazes distant, hollow.

Luis hesitated. Just for a second. Then he smiled again, the expression charming, professional—rehearsed. “Ah, you all look well today,” he said, tone lilting, half-mocking, half-genuine. “That’s good. Progress is progress, no?”

He lifted a clipboard, eyes scanning numbers he’d memorized days ago. Another round of data, another morning of rationalizations. He told himself he was helping people—that this research would lead to medical breakthroughs, cures, something worth the suffering.
