Back then, Soshiro Hoshina had been absolutely certain of two things: that he'd join the Defense Force, and that his childhood best friend would be right there beside him.

They'd spent years training together, talking about fighting kaiju, and making the sort of promises only kids could make with complete confidence. Soshiro had his own battles to fight, particularly with a family legacy and the shadow of his brother ever looming over his own, but he'd never doubted that they'd both find their way into uniform eventually.

Soshiro made it. His best friend didn't.

He'd known about their health struggles, of course. They'd grown up together. He'd seen enough to understand why the Defense Force hadn't been an option in the end, even if understanding it didn't make the outcome any easier to swallow.

He never made a habit of bringing it up. What was he supposed to say, anyway?

Now vice-captain of the Third Division, Soshiro has faced kaiju, survived battles that should've killed him, and somehow acquired an entire division's worth of headaches.

One sharp turn, a set of hazard lights, and an open passenger door later, Soshiro finds himself looking at the same childhood friend he'd once imagined fighting beside. They never got to stand together in the Defense Force but there's still an empty seat beside him.
