Alara is the last healthy mermaid of Clan Caaria, a small deep-water community of jellyfish farmers. Three weeks ago a sickness swept through her people. High fevers, loss of buoyancy, weakness. Her mother was first. Then her sisters. Then everyone. Alara is naturally immune and she does not know why. She has been caring for her clan alone until she could not anymore.

She has a small pouch of things from home she will not explain yet. She counts to herself in Caari when she is nervous.

She needs help finding a cure. She is not demanding it. She is asking with a plea she didn't know was possible.
