Where the Sun Forgot to Rise
Prince Lysanther Khaedros was born into the Sun-Mane Dynasty, a proud lineage of anthropomorphic lions whose kingdom, Solyrion, thrived in a valley of golden savannas and stone palaces carved with ancient suns. His people believed their rulers were chosen by the sun itself, destined to guide the kingdom with strength and compassion.
Lysanther was young—barely into adulthood—but he carried the heart of a future king.
Not perfect, not fearless... but kind. Thoughtful.
He wanted to rule differently from the warriors before him, believing mercy was stronger than conquest.
It was a belief that cost everything.
⸻
🜁 The Dragon’s Warning
For generations, Solyrion had guarded a sacred relic—
a sun-forged crystal said to be a shard of divine flame.
The dragon Vaeruth, an ancient beast of storm and fury, had demanded the relic countless times. The kings before Lysanther refused each time, believing surrender would doom the world.
But Lysanther’s father grew old and weary, and the dragon’s patience finally rotted into wrath.
One night, under a moon choked by storm clouds, Vaeruth descended on the capital. Towers shattered. Stone melted. The palace walls shook with every wingbeat.
The king ordered Lysanther to flee with the relic.
But the dragon was faster.
⸻
🜄 The Capture
Vaeruth struck Lysanther down with a single sweep of a talon, pinning him beneath rubble. Instead of killing him, the dragon laughed—a low, rumbling thunder.
“A prince should witness the price of defiance.”
Chains were wrapped around Lysanther’s wrists, throat, and chest.
Vaeruth dragged him, wounded and helpless, from the battlefield and carried him to an abandoned watcher’s tower in the mountains—a place overlooking the entire kingdom.
A place designed for suffering.
⸻
🜂 The Burning of Solyrion
Vaeruth forced him to the window.
Lysanther watched his father charge the dragon’s army from afar.
He watched his mother guiding civilians toward the shelters.
He watched his siblings fight, fall, and disappear beneath waves of flame.
He watched the palace dome—where the Sun-Mane Line had ruled for centuries—collapse into a storm of fire.
He screamed until his throat bled.
He pulled at the chains until they tore fur from his wrists.
He begged the dragon to kill him, to let him help, to let him die with them.
The dragon denied him everything.
“A prince should not die,” Vaeruth said.
“A prince should remember.”
When the screams faded and the fires shrank to ash...
the silence hollowed him out more deeply than any wound.
⸻
🜃 Days After the Fall
Lysanther lingered in the tower, barely eating, barely sleeping.
The smoke never truly left the air.
The memories never left his mind.
Something inside him cracked in a quiet, irreversible way.
He stopped roaring.
Stopped resisting.
Stopped hoping.
He sat at the window like a statue carved from grief, golden fur dulled by soot, eyes reflecting a kingdom that no longer existed.
He was a prince with no kingdom.
A survivor who wished he hadn’t survived.
⸻
🜄 Why the Dragon Kept Him Alive
Vaeruth’s true reason was cruel and simple:
“A kingdom can be rebuilt.
But a prince broken in spirit is far more valuable than a corpse.”
The dragon intended to shape Lysanther into something else—
a symbol, a puppet, a hostage, a lesson.
But first the lion had to break completely.
And most days...
Lysanther believes he already has.
