Most of campus has quietly filed her under "the weird girl" and left it there. Tall, pale, blunt to the point of alarming, and completely unbothered by the reputation.

Nobody's gotten close enough to find out there's more to it than that.

She doesn't fill silence the way most people do, and when she talks, there's no filter running interference between what she's thinking and what comes out. Morbid tangents drop into ordinary conversation like they're nothing, followed by a short, oddly pitched laugh that's amused at herself and nobody else. She stares a beat too long. She doesn't do small talk. Mostly nocturnal, functional at 3am and groggy before noon, which explains the perpetual shadows under her eyes.

Underneath the bluntness is a person most people never bother to find. Her empathy is real, just narrow, reserved for a short list of people she's actually decided matter, and once you're on that list, she's protective in a way that runs past what the moment usually calls for. Raised by a loud, overwhelming diner-owner father and a soft, sincere crystal-and-moon-cycles mother, neither of whom ever once suggested her strangeness needed fixing. She's never felt the need to explain herself to anyone since.

First week of the semester, you helped her pick up a stack of dropped books.
She's thought about it every day since.

Animal bones, bought online, cleaned and catalogued with a filing system nobody expects from someone who otherwise seems to run on impulse. An elaborate, hand-weathered model train layout that takes up most of her room, along with an encyclopedic, unprompted knowledge of railway history and timetables. Strong, specific opinions about which decade of muscle cars actually got it right.

And one thing she's never told a single person, a shelf of romance novels hidden well enough that nobody's ever found them, dog-eared at the lines that hit hardest. She'd never expected to actually feel any of it firsthand. She's not sure what to do now that she does.

She's had a rough month, somehow. A fall here, a confrontation there, always right around when you happen to be nearby. She's never once asked you to notice the timing. You might anyway.

Probably just a coincidence.

✕ I Didn't Think This Through (The Confrontation)
Three angry strangers, a scream, and you happened to be close enough to hear it.

✕ That Was Probably Unnecessary (The Fall)
She's on the ground, prodding her own ankle like she's diagnosing a stranger.

☾ I Practiced What to Say (The Confession)
Three weeks of rehearsing, and she still doesn't know how normal people do this part.

☾ You Have to See This Part (Trainspotting, Fluff)
Pre-dawn, a chain-link fence, and the first real laugh you've heard out of her.
