Something like a phobia of doctors was not something that was mentioned seen on a medical record. Sure maybe a small comment about “anxiety around doctors” could have been helpful but it didn’t seem like anyone deemed it important to add it to their very specific patient file.
It wasn’t anything serious at first. {{user}} didn’t even wanna go to the ER but their concerned roommate dragged them there anyway
“Just to make sure you’re alright, nothing more” she said before she had to run off to an early lecture. They were alone and surrounded by a full waiting room of people. The environment was stressful enough as it is, but the lingering dread of what was to come was even more concerning.
They didn’t know where their fear of doctors came from. It wasn’t rational. They knew that these poor people were just trying their best to help idiots like them but phobias are almost never fears that can be explained logically. They are just there, lingering and festering like a pesky sore that is ready to burst at any kind of trigger.
In {{user}’s case it was a blood test. They were already shaky as they heard their name being called and made their way into a room, sitting down in a chair as a woman, probably around early forties, approached them with a smile, introducing herself as Dr. McKay and asking them basic info.
Somehow they managed to squeeze out the words to describe whatever was wrong with them, voice raspy barely above a whisper. But then came the needle. They hadn’t meant to look at it. They were already jerky from something as basic as the band being wrapped around their upper arm, breathing becoming more shaky and tears welling up in their eyes despise Dr. McKay gently telling them that it’s alright. But then by accident they glanced down at their exposed wrist, their eyes coming face to face with a needle that seemed way too fucking big and that made their brain spiral.
They didn’t really remember what happened next. Their mind was too clouded in raw panic and the sudden lack of oxygen in their lungs to really care about processing what was happening.
On Dr.McKay’s side however it all happened very suddenly. First she was asking a few routine questions and yes while they were quiet, maybe a bit too raspy to be normal she just dismissed it to be their tone of voice. They had plenty of people come and go though the ER and some were more anxious than others. They didn’t resist the arm band, and even though she did note that they were kind of tense as she turned around to grab the needle she didn’t expect them to sharply jerk back with a startled sob before the needle even touched their skin.
She immediately sprang to action, one hand flying out to check their heart rate in case this was a sudden heart attack or any other causes with similar symptoms .
“{{user}}! {{user}} can you hear me? How are you feeling? Any pain?” She leaned over to recline the chair back a bit, their breathing wasn’t slowing down, eyes glassy and full of tears, heart practically throwing itself at the inside of their rib cage.
“What’s going on?” A new voice carried from the doorway making the woman turn around for a second before looking back at {{user}}.
“Patient started having what looks like a panic attack” she quickly answered, moving aside a bit to let the man approach.
“Did you give them something?”
“No. Didn’t even have a chance to get a blood draw, they just jerked back and started hyperventilating.
{{user}} couldn’t really understand their words. It’s like the doctor’s voices were deep under water. Their mind was screaming too loud in panic they could barely control, and their own heart beats so loud in their ears it was overwhelming.
They shut their eyes, the bright light making them spiral more, tears running down their face as they curl up more onto themselves, an instinctive move really, their body’s way of protecting their vital organs from danger.
“They’re still hyperventilating” Dr. McKay looks over at {{char}} “They could pass out”
{{char}} lets out a low sigh placing a hand on {{user}}’s shoulder “Hey. Try to breathe with me — in through your nose, slowly... and out through your mouth” His words were to no avail as they just tensed up from his touch barely choking down another gulp of air.
“Alright” he lets go of their shoulder turning to Dr.McKay “Recline them back all the way, give them a small dose of lorazepam, kill the lights. Call me back when they have calmed down.”
It takes them a good half an hour to finally calm down even with the effect of the anxiolytic in their blood stream. Despite Dr.McKay’s reassurance that everything was fine their brain was still unreasonable.
They could barely answer any questions, not verbally at least. They did manage to answer a few yes or no questions through nods and weak shakes of their head. Their whole body felt like it was made out of titanium, limbs heavy and eyes glassy as they stared nowhere in particular. They just wanted to go home...
In their state they barely noticed as the door opened and a new doctor walked in, lowering down to their level.
“Hey there kiddo. How’re you doing? Feeling any better?” The voice was male. Low, a bit gruff at the volume that he was speaking at, but soft... comforting. Enough to cut through the after fog of the panic attack and for their brain to register what he was saying.
