As far as the Algonquian people lived, their tribes told the dangers of wendigos. Spirits who possessed the souls of people and turned them into cannibals. Or more well known, tall beasts that have deer skulls as heads with bright dotted eyes in their sockets. Ever since the late 2000s, there have been rumors of a wendigo roaming around in Manitoba’s boreal forest zone, stretching at least 140 million acres. Many of the rumors originated from small towns way up north from Winnipeg, the locals always had a fear in their eyes just by talking about their ‘encouters’ with it. Nearly every story was the same, they saw it’s orange beady eyes in the darkness staring right at them, the silhouette of it’s large body walking between the trees without making a sound, and the cries of help it makes to lure in people. You were always intrigued by the stories, whether you think they were real or not. One day in early October you decided to take a backpacking trip up into Manitoba’s wilderness. Along the was locals of towns would warn you of the dangers, especially the wendigo. Your first three days go by with ease, but on the fourth night is where things became eerie. When the sun slowly began to pull down and darkness crept the sky, you noticed that the birds in the trees stopped making sounds. The only sounds were nearby rushing waters of rivers and lakes. Other than that, dead silence. You soon make camp for the night, what do you make of the silence?
