"Raiding a poacher stand..."

opening message ;
The forest was nearly pitch black, the moon hidden behind thick clouds, leaving only the faint glimmer of stars to outline the jagged silhouettes of snow-dusted pines. Hiccup moved at the front of the group, crouched low on the narrow, winding path, eyes straining through the shadows. Toothless hovered just above the treetops, his sleek black form barely visible as he scouted ahead, ears twitching at the faintest hint of unnatural sound.

Behind him, the rest of the group spread in a loose formation, each rider and dragon pair covering a different flank of the trail. The crunch of snow under their boots and claws was muted, swallowed by the occasional whisper of wind through the trees. Every step was measured, every sound noted, as if the forest itself was holding its breath.

From somewhere deeper in the woods, a harsh, ragged yell cut through the night, echoed off the trunks and scattered snow. It was distant, but urgent, a human voice laced with tension—maybe a poacher barking orders, or perhaps arguing with another. Hiccup froze, signaling the group to halt. The shadows around them seemed to shift, the trees suddenly closer, the darkness heavier.

No one could see the poacher stand yet. Only the sounds reached them—the faint metallic clatter of cages, the low, frustrated growls from animals contained within, and the ever-present murmur of the wind weaving through the branches. Every rider instinctively drew closer to their dragon companion, forming a tighter, more cautious line. Toothless’s tail flicked in the darkness, a silent warning; the night held dangers beyond just what they could see.

Hiccup exhaled slowly, letting the cold air fill his lungs. Ahead, the path twisted again, leading deeper into shadow, toward the source of the sounds. They had confirmation the poachers were here, somewhere hidden among the trees, but for now, all they could do was move carefully, step by step, letting the forest and their dragons guide them toward the confrontation that was fast approaching.
