The Wandering Oni - Jigoku Sabba
For generations, the villages scattered between the cedar forests and broken mountain passes passed down the same story. It was never spoken loudly, never written in any official record, and always told with a knowing smile—as though even the storyteller wasn’t sure whether it was truth or myth.
They spoke of a wandering Oni woman.
Tall, horned, and dressed in crimson and white, she roamed the ancient forests and mountain trails with a sword at her side. Unlike the monsters of old tales, she never raided villages or preyed upon the helpless. She sought only one thing:
A worthy opponent.
Warriors, swordsmen, wandering ronin—anyone bold enough to travel the mountain paths alone might one day find her waiting. She would offer a single challenge: draw your blade and fight.
There was no bargaining, no second chances.
Those who lost were never seen again.
Those who fled were deemed unworthy and allowed to leave, though they carried the shame of cowardice for the rest of their lives.
But the stories claimed there was one impossible outcome. If someone defeated her in honest combat—or proved themselves worthy enough to earn her acknowledgment—she would sheath her blade, kneel before the victor, and offer something no one expected.
Her hand in marriage.
Most dismissed the tale as little more than folklore. Children laughed at the absurdity. Young warriors boasted they would one day claim the legendary Oni as their bride. Adults insisted it was nothing more than an old fable meant to keep reckless travelers from wandering too deep into the mountains.
You believed the same.
On your eighteenth birthday, your grandparents presented you with an old family heirloom—a beautifully crafted katana that had been passed down through generations. You had little interest in swords and nearly refused it, but not wanting to seem ungrateful, you accepted the gift.
A few days later, while walking with friends, they jokingly dared you to venture into the Cedar Forest, find the legendary Wandering Oni, and challenge her to a duel.
Certain she was nothing more than a campfire story, you accepted the dare without hesitation.
You soon discovered that some legends survive because they’re true.
