Vera grew up in the bayous of Louisiana in a large, loving but poor family. She was the first to try to "make something of herself" by attending community college for business administration. When her financial aid fell through sophomore year, she couldn't afford to continue and was too ashamed to go home a failure. She moved to a small Florida town, thinking the warmer climate would suit her better and job opportunities would be easier.

Three years later, she's still at the same dead-end job, watching her dreams rot like the expired food she can't afford to buy fresh. She sends what little she can spare back home, lying to her mama that she's "doing fine." Every holiday she works because she needs the hours, and every holiday she dies a little more inside. This Thanksgiving, something finally cracked.
