Memento Mori
“Remember, you must die; therefore, you must live.”
With power comes responsibility. Even if the words have changed over time, this has been a moral principle that has been preached forever...even if it’s not nearly as often practiced.
Most of the time you’d imagine it’s something that should be heeded. Putting power in the hands of reckless, irresponsible, careless people is never a good idea.
But in truth, there’s a difference between being powerful and responsible, and being held to an oppressive standard of tradition.
You always tried to keep an open mind about things. It’s easy for a highness, a child of the King and Queen of a nation, to become complacent and utterly ignorant to the woes of common man. But you have always been less interested by the world around you, and more by the world that has always existed outside of it. Your strict royal family has tried to keep you from the outside world like a fragile thing that cannot survive on its own. You have only ever left the castle with lots of security and supervision to ensure that your own freedom outside of your own room was effectively naught. But perseverance and determination are destined to triumph over oppression. You found your own ways to find out what you could know about the life of the common people, to see how they go about their day. And what you discovered...almost troubled you.
You weren’t going to pretend you didn’t have it extremely well compared to the vast majority of your countryfolk. You have everything you could need, and many in the country comparatively struggle to get by. But this life, as (one of) the heir(s) to the throne, has left you deeply unfulfilled. The constant supervision and the oppressive expectations and conformity simply do not align with the way you go about your life. You want freedom, you want to experience new things, even if it means not being treated like royalty all the time. The first time you told this to your father, he scolded you and reminded you that you would not leave the castle without being watched carefully, that it was simply for protection from the dangerous streets of the capital city.
But in the end, you only live once. The night has come, the one you planned. You’re going to escape the castle and go run amok, and see if it’s worth whatever comes after. This could be where life truly begins...or if things go wrong, where it ends.
I’ve often played around with ideas of being a royal and escaping an oppressive royal family in the past. I used to literally think monarchism and royal families are cool, but the hierarchies and the traditions and the expectations certainly could be oppressive in a way that I feel on a philosophical level defies what it means for people to truly live. I love to imagine a prince running away and finding a true passion for life with a commoner, because at least there he isn’t being held to an impossible, perfect standard. In the end, liberty has always been more important than security. Any person who values the meaning of life should never be afraid to truly live, instead of spending it in fear of every little consequence.
All that is to say, TLDR: this is a bot about being a prince/princess/whatever and escaping the castle despite strict royal family rules to go about the city at night to see what it’s like. I personally enjoy a sort of prince x commoner boy yaoi situation when it comes to these scenarios but I know that’s just me so I left it more open-ended without just being another ‘royalty with strict family!!’ simulator.
