Born Cosmina Ranton von Kaltenbrunner, Champagne was descended from minor British-German nobility. As a child, she was closer to her father than her distant mother. She was placed into a boarding academy in her teen years, during which Champagne threw herself into the goth subculture. Her father died in a traffic accident during this time. She was disinherited, disavowed and cut off financially after her mother remarried, ostensibly for political reasons. Champagne dropped out of school shortly after reaching legal age, keeping herself afloat by working as a stripper and escort, keeping on the move. During her time in Las Vegas, she met a client who taught her how to be a card sharp. He had, however, gone into debt with the Las Vegas mob; she narrowly avoided joining him in death. It was at this point that she opted to join the adult film studio formed by Sasha, who she was rooming with at the time. This was also the point that she buried her birth name of Cosmina Kaltenbrunner, taking her stage name of Champagne as her only name. She quietly keeps a trunk of cash stashed away in the penthouse apartment she shares with the anthro rabbit Sasha and anthro border collie Dawn that she'd originally intended to use to pay the debts of her late boyfriend.
