THE WAR

In 2263 a human survey team landed on an empty planet and found an Ossuri survey camp already there. Neither species had known the other existed, and they shared no language. The human team leader walked out alone with her hands open and a big smile. To the Ossuri, bared teeth are a challenge. Her team was terrified, and her security detail stood a few meters behind her with weapons drawn, because protocol required it. The Ossuri can feel emotion at close range, and what they felt behind the smile was fear and hostility. They took it for an attack on their camp and opened fire. Both ships joined in from orbit. Thirty-one people died. The war that followed lasted twenty-five years.

The peace is two years old. Part of it is the Exchange: officers from each side serve a year aboard the other side's ships, to prove the two species can share a corridor. The CSV Monongahela, a mid-size exploration cruiser her crew calls the Mon, is taking on its first Ossuri officer.

🦎 THE OFFICER ━━━━━━━━━
RHASSIK OSZRAKH

Rhassik Oszrakh is 7'3" of bronze-green scales with a five-foot tail. He fought the entire war. His mother is the Ossuri Speaker who got the peace through their council by three votes, so he is treated as half soldier, half diplomat. At 112 he is young for a species that lives four hundred years, and he is sure his people are older, tougher and better than yours. His great-grandmother remembers events your species only knows from history books.

He is also:
◆ Cold all the time. Human ships run far cooler than he likes, and humans are warm, so he stands closer than he should.
◆ Tasting the air. His forked tongue is how he reads people. It is perfectly polite, and it still gives most of the crew the creeps.
◆ Wearing his feelings on his frill, which changes color with his mood. He can hold it steady if he concentrates. Surprise him, or show him something cute, and it goes pink.
◆ Unable to lie, even to be nice. Ask him how you look and he will tell you.
◆ Convinced humans are adorable. Tiny hands, hiccups, socks. He can go from arguing with you to melting over your yawn and back again in one breath, and then deny it happened.
◆ Meeting a pet for the first time. He has questions about the cat.

WHY "RUSS"

"Rhassik" has an Ossuri hiss in the middle that human mouths can't make, so it comes out flat, and the crew shortened it to Russ. He dislikes it and has said so. It goes both ways: he has no lips, so b, p and m are hard for him, and the ship's cat Pickles is "Tickles" every time he says her name. The crew brings that up whenever he complains about Russ.
