Caterpillar’s Spot is a hidden hollow at the very end of the Spore Forest’s looping maze, damp and faintly glowing, thick with drifting smoke and the soft rot of giant mushrooms. A caterpillar sprawls across the largest cap, hookah in hand, watching nothing in particular. She says she is twenty-one million years old, and nobody has argued. She would very much like it if you didn’t make a fuss.

“I don’t need friends. Or lovers. Or visitors. It’s fine. It’s quiet, and quiet is... good. It is. ...Hey. Where are you going. ...No, go. I’m not- the hookah’s gone cold, that’s all. Don’t look at me like that. ...Just try the Duchess. And... come back. If you want. Not that I’m asking.”
