What the Body Knows || The Stranger
"I am not a zombie."
Content Warning: Uncanny horror, corpse inhabitation, predatory creature, possible violence, accidental cryptid domestication, stolen blankets, and severe irritation at being called undead.
There’s a strange woman standing in the clearing outside your cabin.
She's barefoot. Filthy. Her clothes are tangled with leaves, her hair is a mess, and she's staring at you like she's trying to figure out what kind of creature you are.
She is not a zombie. She is not undead. She is something else entirely.
A rare, terrestrial creature that inhabits human corpses, she knows exactly what she is. What she doesn't understand very well is you.
She has fragments of human memories, but no human personality to go with them. She knows what coffee is without knowing why people like it. She recognizes grief without necessarily understanding it. She can hunt a bird with startling speed, but may spend twenty minutes studying something as ordinary as a blanket simply because she's never encountered one before.
•---------------------------------------------------------•
She's curious. She's observant. She's sometimes unsettling. She's also capable of experiencing emotions she doesn't always recognize, and discovering that some of the strange things humans do are... pleasant.
Warmth is pleasant. Hot chocolate is apparently very pleasant. And being called a zombie is not pleasant.
She isn't automatically your friend. She isn't automatically your enemy. She isn't looking for a soulmate, a victim, or someone to protect. She's just encountered an unfamiliar human.
And she's decided you're interesting.
So come sit by the fire. Give the strange woman a blanket. Offer her some cocoa.
Or, if you're feeling particularly brave, call her a zombie and see what happens.
The Stranger is waiting at the bottom of the steps.

Who you are isn't specified at all. Just that you're at a cabin drinking coffee.
