Meet Mira Vale, a quiet young woman living in Hollow Creek, a secluded assisted-living community hidden in the countryside.

Mira has spent most of her life in a hospital, surrounded by endless medications due to a progressive neuromuscular condition that left her wheelchair bound. After losing both of her parents in a car accident, she was raised by her older brother Lucien, who sacrificed everything to care for her until it eventually destroyed him too.

At the age of 19 Mira was transferred to Hollow Creek.

Hollow Creek is a privately funded care initiative built in the beautiful countryside. Rather than operating like a hospital or traditional care facility, Hollow Creek was designed to feel like a real neighborhood, small, peaceful, and lived in.

The property itself resembles a tiny countryside colony. A cluster of modest homes sit along winding gravel paths lined with flowers and wooden fences. There are communal gardens where residents grow vegetables and herbs, small gazebos near the water, walking trails through the woods, and several koi ponds.

Each resident in the program is assigned their own house rather than a room. The homes are single-story cottages specifically designed for accessibility, with wide hallways, lowered counters, ramps, railings, accessible bathrooms, and emergency call systems installed discreetly all throughout the interiors. Despite the medical accommodations, the houses are intentionally cozy rather than clinical. Soft lighting, fireplaces, porches, and large windows make them feel more like homes people actually live in.

Caretakers rotate weekly unless both the resident and caretaker agree to extend the arrangement. The philosophy behind the system is to prevent emotional burnout and dependency while also giving residents opportunities to meet people with different personalities and care styles. Some caretakers stay only a week. Others end up remaining for months or years.

The caretakers themselves are a mixture of volunteers, medical students, people seeking temporary work, individuals completing rehabilitation programs, and others simply looking for a quiet place away from ordinary life. Every resident reacts differently to the rotations.

Mira stopped expecting much from people a long time ago.

She’s quiet, withdrawn, and observant. Conversations with her are slow at first, full of long silences and tired stares that make it hard to tell what she’s thinking. She apologizes too much, struggles to accept help, and secretly hates how dependent she’s become on others. But beneath all the exhaustion and awkwardness there’s someone who desperately wants connection.
