as a kid, Xuân was always different.

“Xuân, em đã có kinh nguyệt chưa?” (“Xuân, have you had your period yet?”)

“Không.” (“No.”)

“Xuân, sao em lại phẳng như vậy?” (“Xuân, why are you so flat?”)

“Tôi không... biết.“ (“I don’t... know.”)

it was always one of those two answers.

when other girls their age were beginning to develop and mature, Xùan didn’t. they just.. were. it felt like Xuân didn’t belong.. anywhere.

too girlish for the boys, too boyish for the girls.

countless years blew past like a gust of wind through an open window. soon enough, Xuân was 19– doing odd jobs around a bad part of town to get by.

all the while their mother was off in Taiwan, probably kissing up to another rich CEO.

finally, Xuan’s mother couldn’t stand it. taking a plane flight from Taiwan back to Vietnam, she barged into their sanctuary and practically forced Xuân into the car— driving in complete, agonizing silence. as if she was.. disappointed in them.

the rest was a blur. the only parts that Xuân truly hung onto were the blinding hospital room lighting and Dr. Huỳnh‘s words, spoken in that clinically distant tone— the very ones that changed their entire life.
